| Everywhere you read the word tongues you should read the word as languages. This will upset some well meaning people who babble incomprehensible sylables . As a gift SOME have it many do not. |

oooo, I like that jab, actually any unknown language would be considered babbling if you didn't understand it to be a language. Where do you think the name Babylon came from? It came from the tower of Babel which was so named because everyone suddenly spoke strange languages that many didn't know or understand.
quote: For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. 1 cor 14:2
People who speak in tongues in a public setting should do so, as Paul suggests, for the edification of the church, thus an interpretation is required, but those who appear to speak unto themsleves are conversing with God, as per the above scripture reference. Though some would consider it babbling in incomprehensible syllables, it is only incomprehensible to our understanding of language. Some who speak in tongues are certainly speaking in a language from another part of this world, but some are speaking a heavenly language.

I am presbyterian where we dont reallyt speak in tounges. I lived in Ohio with my aunt and her family, who are pentacostal, and went to "church camp" while i was there. hey spent a whole night of devotion to speaking in tounges. I was one of like three people who didn't "speak in tounges" by the end of the night.

Tongues is a Holy Spirit inspired language and gift.
"When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as aof a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."
Then they were all amazed and marveled saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we heard, each in our own language in which we were born?
These people were surprised because Galileans were speaking in different languages without learning them.
".... we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God"
"For he who speaks in a tongue does NOT speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries."
Notice that those who speak in tongues, address God!!! It's like our personal secret language with God. We don't know what the Holy Spirit is praying about, but we do know that He is possibly praising God or praying about somebody, even you. There are also tongues that are interpreted - which is called prophecy. Anybody who believes and wants to receive this gift, can get it. Just pray about it and eventially God will give it to you.
"And if any man think that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know." (1 Cor. 8:2) |

--------------------- Some who speak in tongues are certainly speaking in a language from another part of this world, but some are speaking a heavenly language. ---------------------
There is no indication in the Bible of a "heavenly" tongue, that notion is completely unscriptural, and it's completely obvious to anyone with even the slightest knowledge of linguistics, that this repetative "babble" is from no earthen nation.

well, i agree that it should be read as 'languages', and i'll tell you why. not everybody who claims to have the gift of tongues is speaking in a true unknown language... some are faking it by babbling incomprehensive syllables as bruce pointed out.
i used to be one of them. i KNEW that of many gifts the Lord blessed me with, the gift of speaking in tongues was not one of them. but i was under such enormous pressure by my peers to "recieve" this gift that i finally just opened my mouth and started spitting out nonsense to appease them.
i believe that there are many, many out there that fake it just like i did... because they are made to feel inadequate as a Christian if they don't conform.
NS430...
the gift of tongues is only one of many gifts of the Holy Spirit. no special emphasis should be put on this one particular gift. to some the Holy Spirit gives this gift, to others He imparts the gift of discernment, to yet others the gift of prophecy, etc. etc.
perhaps someone here can list all the gifts of the Holy Spirit? it's late, i forget... |

Not a jab more of a poke. As to tongues , been there done it and don't miss it. Seeing as there are more gifts available why not ernestly desire the gift of helps , or gift of faith? I think these would be harder to fake from peer pressure!! |

In the Word it states that All people can speak in Tongues, but rememeber that Tongues is a sign to Unbelievers. Let me ask you this, Can all Christians be able to heal the sick, or send Demons packing, or Rebuke storms?
Holy Spirit dwells in Us all, I wanna see what my brothers and sisters think and know about these things.
Thanks for your replies. |

People do make too big a deal out of speaking in Tongues, It is one gift out of many and the bible encourages us to seek them all. Wether a person speaks in tongues or not doesn't make them any more spiritual than the next person, but it's funny how some of those who do speak in tongues are quick to judge those who don't as somehow being less than they are and some of those who don't speak in tongues are quick to judge those who do as weird or even lunatics.
Onfire- anyone with the slightest knowledge of linguistics may indeed consider some tongues as being "babble", but anyone with the slightest knowledge of how small and full of misunderstanding humanity really is, knows that there are some things that are beyond our comprehension and shouldn't be blasted because we don't understand.

| The gift of tongues is mainly for speaking to someone that speaks another language. It was used as a sign and still is but unless u need another language to speak to someone u would be better off with a BETTER gift like healing. A gift that can help people. I am going to make some a little angry but i am going to say this. I go to a pentecost church that believes in the speaking of tongues and i believe in the speaking or tongues. What i do not understand is why so many want to speak in tongues what even Paul said to desire the better gifts. I believe why so many want to speak in tongues is that u can speak in tongues and not have God but if u were to ask for healing and did not get it that it would tell where u really stand with God. |

I'm fairly new to this forum and just stumbled across this thread this morning. It's something that I've had questions about ever since I started attended my church 1 1/2 years ago. It's a non-denominational church but the pastor has a Pentecostal background. It seems that everyone there speaks in tongues but me. I've prayed about it, asked God for the gift, yet nothing. If I were to start speaking in tongues it would just be mimicking the others around me and I won't do that. All along I have had the feeling that many are just babbling and copying some of the others who are really gifted in this area. I might be wrong, and I don't like to judge others, but that is the feeling I get. I have been told by more than one person that if I don't speak in tongues then I'm not filled with the Holy Spirit. I found this scripture from 1 Corinthians 12 which seems to support the fact that not everyone will receive the gift of tongues.
quote: 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2You know that[1] you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 4There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same[2] Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
Funny, one of the women who told me I wasn't Spirit filled because I didn't speak in tongues wasn't aware of the above scripture. She quotes the following scripture from Mark 16:17.
quote: And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
So what do I believe? It all seems to be so contradictory. Almost any subject I have a question about can have a number of answers depending on which scripture you refer to. I guess that's another topic in itself. |

SCRIPTURES UNDER CONSIDERATION (caps mine): Romans 12 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether PROPHECY, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 7 Or MINISTRY, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on TEACHING; 8 Or he that exhorteth, on EXHORTATION: he that GIVETH, let him do it with simplicity; he that RULETH, with diligence; he that sheweth MERCY, with cheerfulness.
1 Corinthians 12 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the WORD OF WISDOM; to another the WORD OF KNOWLEDGE by the same Spirit; 9 To another FAITH by the same Spirit; to another the GIFTS OF HEALINGS by the same Spirit; 10 To another the WORKING OF MIRACLES; to another PROPHECY; to another DISCERNING OF SPIRITS [there’s no such thing as “gift of discernment”]; to another DIVERS [different] KINDS OF TONGUES (I Cor.13:1); to another the INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally (individually) as he will.
1 Corinthians 12 28 And God hath set some in the church, first APOSTLES, secondarily PROHETS, thirdly TEACHERS, after that MIRACLES , then GIFTS OF HEALINGS, HELPS, GOVERNMENTS, DIVERSITIES OF TONGUES [different kinds of tongues].
I CORINTHIANS 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men AND OF ANGELS, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. [what’s so wrong about calling tongues of angels – who are in heaven – a heavenly language. I think that’s nit picking, myself]
1 Corinthians 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, EXCEPT HE INTERPRET, that the church may receive edifying. [tongues WITH interpretation is equal to prophecy.]
1 Corinthians 12 31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. [I maintain that the best gifts are the ones that are most needed at the time.]
QUADDING WROTE: “What i do not understand is why so many want to speak in tongues what even Paul said to desire the better gifts. I believe why so many want to speak in tongues is that u can speak in tongues and not have God but if u were to ask for healing and did not get it that it would tell where u really stand with God.”
COMMENT: The ability to speak in tongues is evidence that one has been baptized with the Holy Ghost. I do not believe that one who DOES NOT HAVE GOD would experience either, unless the former were faked. Asking for healing and not getting it does not tell where you really stand with God, IMHO. One either asks amiss or else does not stand in faith believing that he receives his healing.
LWILSON WROTE: “I have been told by more than one person that if I don't speak in tongues then I'm not filled with the Holy Spirit. I found this scripture from 1 Corinthians 12 which seems to support the fact that not everyone will receive the gift of tongues.” COMMENT: One does not speak with tongues unless he has been baptized with the Holy Spirit. That is a fact and truth. I Cor.12 is listing the gifts of the Spirit, among which are divers kinds of tongues and interpretation of tongues. Everyone does NOT have divers kinds of tongues which have to be interpreted; but everyone who has been immersed in the Holy Ghost CAN (is able to, if they will only yield themselves) speak in tongues…..the kind spoken of in I Cor. 14:2. 1 Corinthians 14 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
QUADDING POSTED: “The gift of tongues is mainly for speaking to someone that speaks another language. It was used as a sign and still is but unless u need another language to speak to someone u would be better off with a BETTER gift like healing.” COMMENT: The gift of divers kinds of tongues (which has to have interpretation) was for the same reasons as was prophecy: I Cor.14:3 says “But he that prophesies speaks unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort (to edify the church, vs.4). It is a sign to the UNBELIEVER, NOT THE BELIEVER.
BURNINFUEL20 SAID, “In the Word it states that All people can speak in Tongues, but rememeber that Tongues is a sign to Unbelievers. Let me ask you this, Can all Christians be able to heal the sick, or send Demons packing, or Rebuke storms?” LET’s re-read the following scriptures: Mark 16: 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
COMMENT: The signs that follow, follow them that BELIEVE – that’s the key! !
James 4 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Matthew 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [didn’t necessarily say “whosoever,” but definitely “whatsoever.” Storms are “whatsoevers,” aren’t they?
Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Jesus has given us this power by immersion with the Holy Spirit.[Acts 1:8a says, “but ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upone you…” One can no more be saved (born again) without faith (believing) than he can be immersed with the Holy Spirit without faith (believing); but one is for forgiveness of sins, and the other is for power to be witnesses unto Jesus.
MY QUIVERS FULL, YOU SAID, “People do make too big a deal out of speaking in Tongues, It is one gift out of many and the bible encourages us to seek them all.” COMMENT: Would you please direct me to the passage that says that. IMHO there isn’t one.
"By his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us" (Heb. 9:12).

when you address a subject like this you will see bais and indoctrination at it's worst. people refuse to see outside of their little box. i came from a charismatic church and reasoned my way out of it. first to many have told me of and i have witnessed it myself of the "classes" to learn how to speak in a miraculas way. 1 cor 12 speaks of the gifts and ends by saying that there is a better way. in 1 cor 13 the better way was showing love. these miracles were creidentials or signs because they had no written word of god. but once "that which is complete comes that which was in part would cease." all the gifts were spoken of in 1 cor 12 would cease to exist. why!?! because as 1 peter tells us we were given everything needed for life and godliness. the word of god!!! see to those of a charismatic backround the word of god can be superceeded by their miraculous revelations. when in debate after debate over this issue that i have read it all could have been settled if they would have raised someone from the dead, reatatch an ear, regenerate a hand, drink a known poisen, heal a known defect. Jesus and the apostles did these openly in front of skeptics but it is always "i heard", I read" or i once saw but then never will do it except around others of like belief and always undocumented. almost all that were healed were know by all those around the area and had defect that could be seen. these charlatins prey on those with simple minds and can be swayed by emotions. they can be whipped up into an emotional riot. these tounges (lang.) were known by those hearing as we see at the pentacost even in 1 cor. 14 we see the church miss using the gift and was told not to speak in a differant lang. unless there was an interpreter because an unbeliver may think you to be mad. their worshipp is entirly based on emotion not knowlege.
