Aside from the book 'the da vinci code' i think that this is a very serious question that needs to be addressed. Why do so many people cringe in fear when it is suggested that Jesus could've taken a wife. And what if that wife was Mary Magdalin? (cant spell) In the bible jesus kissed her to the point that it made his other deciples angry. Now we first must consider that in that part of the world, in those days, it was custom for a man to greet a woman he knew with a kiss. We have to ask ourselfs how was jesus kissing mary that angered his osther deciples. An odd act the sun of god would show twords a prostitute, no? The bible is scilent on jesus' marriage status both ways. It says nothing on the topic of him being married. Which many would take as proff that he wasent. (Rember, the bible says nothing about pluto. but we dont debate it's existance.) And the bible also gives no reason as to why jesus wasent married. There is the key. What if he fathered a child? What if jesus had living decendents? That would certinly give the pope a run for his money. If jesus was married and had children it wouldent bring christianity down in a day. No passage in the bible says "And Christ took not a wife, and fathered not a child!"

hi
i would think something so important in His life would have been documented

I haven't seen anybody "cringe in fear"; I have, however, seen many people laughing (including myself) at posts like yours. If Jesus had been married, it would have been documented...SOMEWHERE. But it is not and did not happen.
>And what if that wife was Mary Magdalin? (cant spell) In the bible jesus kissed her to the point that it made his other deciples angry. You need to do a little review of history with emphasis on the specifics which your are *sorely* lacking on. One might believe you gained your 'knowledge' of Christianity from reading Jack Chick tracts... For starters, Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute.
>The bible is scilent on jesus' marriage status both ways. It says nothing on the topic of him being married. Which many would take as proff that he wasent. Logic doesn't seem to be your strong suite.
>What if he fathered a child? What if jesus had living decendents?
What if the moon was made of cheese? What if airplanes could fly underwater? What if there were 15 different human genders? What if you could mix Pepsi Cola with Ginger Ale and it turned into nitroglycerine? Etc. etc. etc.
"What If" senarios are meaningless in this reguard.
>That would certinly give the pope a run for his money.
Huh? How so?
>If jesus was married and had children it wouldent bring christianity down in a day. No passage in the bible says "And Christ took not a wife, and fathered not a child!"
So?
>JUST BECAUSE FACTS ARE IGNORED....DOSNT MEAN THEY GO AWAY!
You're a true pithecanthropus.

To StuckInIraq,
It is difficult to discuss things when people are not careful with their facts. As Mirage pointed out, Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute. The Gospel says she was "unobservant," meaning she did not keep all the smaller little points of the Law--perhaps a few dietary provisions, etc.
It was NOT customary for men to greet women with a kiss--certainly not in Judaism. It is still customary among Orthodox Jews for men to avoid touching any women other than their wives--I don't know where you got this tidbit of misinformation.
Lastly, that story is from a Gnostic book which is NOT part of the Bible. While you or I may think it worthy, it is not canonical, not part of the Bible.

Yes, the married life of jesus is documented. In other gospels. Do you think that the 4 gospels are the ONLY documents that deal with the life of jesus. These other gospels join ranks with the likes of The Book Of Enoch. Books that for one reason or the other have been left out of the bible because they donot fit the typical view of christianity. Oh...and to Mirage here is something for you. JEESUS! Look, i spelled his name wrong? Point out what a total idiot i am, and how your religious knowlege is better than mine! Just trying to help you through your day, you bitter old fart!

oh boy
stuck - please don't call mirage old
he's the same age as me and i'm having a terrible time of dealing with it
and since you're new here i'll make a few recommendations
if you're going to be belligerent you'll need to be flawless - like spelling 'dosnt' correctly and using an ellipsis properly - or in your case, choosing the proper way to seperate your thoughts
fix those things and i'll take you seriously
p.s. you're not a total idiot because you spelled Jesus wrong, but for the reasons i mentioned above

Care to name which "other gospels" those may be?

Would that be "The Gospel According to StuckInIraq's Anemic Penis" or perhaps: "The Book of Homer" (as in, Simpson)? -- Inquiring minds want to know. So, please DO tell us, oh learned scholar, about your source for this information. Do you actually have one or did you not think that far ahead yet?
>Do you think that the 4 gospels are the ONLY documents that deal with the life of jesus.
Did myself or anyone here say or suggest anything like that? Gee, I don't think so. Maybe it would be best if you try to actually read what is *really* written here instead of listening to what the little voices in your head say. Did it ever occur to you that they might not always have your best interests in mind? -- Something to ponder next time you have one of your "urges"...
>These other gospels join ranks with the likes of The Book Of Enoch. Books that for one reason or the other have been left out of the bible because they donot fit the typical view of christianity.
Wow! For someone who can't even get their terminology straight, you're obviously quite an apocryphal scholar. I had no idea. Forgive me for casting doubt on such a mighty avatar of intellect such as yourself. BTW, I have to say that I really loved your interpretation as to why the apocrypha (a term you are apparently, and ironically not familiar with) is not cannon (another term you don't seem to know).
So, lead on, wise fakir!
>Oh...and to Mirage here is something for you. JEESUS!
Um, excuse me, but doesn't using the word "Jesus" in that capacity constitute a 'swear', or at the very least, taking his name "in vain", and thus violating Exodus 20:7...? -- Nice job, genius.
>Look, i spelled his name wrong? Point out what a total idiot i am, and how your religious knowlege is better than mine!
Hey Stuck, hallucinate often?
WHERE in my *original* post to you did I ever criticize you for a spelling error? -- I did not. So I'm curious as to what you're 'spelling' comment is refering to.
Second, my "religious knowledge", as you so quaintly put it, IS vastly superior to yours. You're like a ferocious Pommeranian facing off against the Delta Force. Like the man said, "Do you feel lucky?"
>Just trying to help you through your day, you bitter old fart!
Nice to see another hypocritical Christian making my job easier. Thank you, sincerely.
BTW, how old do you think I am? I'm curious.
>JUST BECAUSE FACTS ARE IGNORED....DOSNT MEAN THEY GO AWAY!
I wonder if the girls at your highschool use a similar slogan pertaining to someone else....?

Oh one more thing for Stuck:
Are you really literally "stuck in Iraq" in some military or US interest capacity or is that just a handle that you came up with?
Just curious.

To Mirage,
Strange you should ask!
quote: Hey Stuck, hallucinate often?
Have you seen his thread, Drugs and Religion, yet? The thought surely did cross my mind; but I was waiting for more evidence before drawing any firm conclusions about it.
I am waiting at present for his explanation on how shrooms could induce God to appear. He claims to have received several keen spiritual insights on shrooms--certainly I must speculate if he was reading an imaginary "gospel" while tripping.... I have the Nag Hammadi texts--any gospel which teaches that Jesus was married is news to me. I also know about the Priory of Sion and their beliefs in the Merovingian kings. StuckInIraq appears to be blurring the two....

To StuckInIraq,
Alexander Pope wrote in a poem a nice piece of advice, "A little learning is a dangerous thing." (Yes, I can document that.) Now, you speak of the Book of Enoch and various "other gospels." Frankly, sir, I doubt if you've ever read any of them. I possess the Book of Enoch and have read it. I know what it says. I have the Gnostic books and have read several of them but not all. Offhand, I think I can say I did read all of the gospels but not all of the other books. I highly doubt you have read even one.
Your knowledge is second or third hand, so it seems to me. Your references to these books are garbled and incoherent. Your lack of attention to detail tells me you do not accurately reproduce in your mind what you read. It is either that, or you are reading the most incomprehensible authors around today.
Get the texts. Lay off the shrooms and read them. That would be my advice to you. I will entertain any ideas, the wilder the idea the more interesting to me--but there are limits to my credulity. You've gone far past my limits.

I doubt if we'll ever hear from *this* cretin again...
Looks like it's time for a *new* one. Hey B, could you call that place and order one for us? -- I'd ask wmac to do it, but he's been stuck in the bathroom all day after mixing Thai cuisine with too many Vodka & Redbull's. Wellwisher is out gettting a pedicure, and Russ has been planted in front of the TV, in his room, for six hours watching that dammable "Leave It To Beaver" marathon. Eva & Evolved1 & Modig, I'm pretty sure, are having a menage~a-toi in the library -- and I DON'T want to walk in on that. So that leaves you. So could you call them?
This time, maybe, we could get a 'Jewish-Wiccan' or maybe a 'teenage-Fundy'. What do you think?

While I have no firm convictions about this matter one way or the other, I think it's interesting that a number of Bible scholars and historians have supported the idea that He was married.
Ancient Judaism identified five principal responsibilities of a father to his son, one of which was to arrange his marriage. No ancient Jewish writer ever accused Jesus' earthly father (Joseph) of failing to meet any of these responsibilities, including that of arranging his Son's marriage. More importantly, celibacy was extremely unusual among Jewish men of that time and place. In fact, were a man not to marry, his decision would have been seen as in direct disobedience to God's laws. Since it is not stated in the New Testament that He was not married, experts on Jewish culture believe that He more than likely was. Certain of them have said specifically:
"If Jesus was not married, this fact would have been glaringly conspicuous. It would have drawn attention to itself and been used to characterize and identify him It would have set him apart, in some significant sense, from his contemporaries. If this were the case, surely at least one of the Gospel accounts would make some mention of so marked a deviation from custom? If Jesus were indeed as celibate as later tradition claims, it is extraordinary that there is no reference to any such celibacy. The absence of any such reference strongly suggests that Jesus, as far as the question of celibacy was concerned, conformed to the conventions of his time and culture-suggests, in short, that he was married."
Also there Is no doubt that Christ presented Himself as an inspired religious teacher. As such, He would have been expected to be married. According to an ancient Jewish text, the Mishnah, an unmarried man "may not be a teacher."
Was Mary Magdalene Jesus' Wife? Possibly. Again, this is substantiated by scholars familiar with ancient Jewish culture. For instance when Mary Magdalene recognized Jesus after his resurrection, she said addressed Him as "Rabboni," an Aramaic term sometimes reserved for one's husband. Also, her vigil at the cross and her role in preparing His body for burial were acts normally associated with a wife and not just a close female friend.

Stuck,
Do the Gospels say that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute? Do they say that Jesus kissed her? I haven't found these things in the Gospels. If you could please give me the chapters and verses, I would appreciate it.
